Callao (Lima), Peru

Our second day in Lima, which again we spent with Oscar.

Lima has about 12 million people within it’s city. That is about 1/3 of Peru’s total population. There are 43 districts, 30 of them are urban. The city is definitely overcrowded. The traffic is crazy to the point of being dangerous. Often more than 2 streets intersect, without stop signs or signals. The only two features that are necessities on cars are brakes and a horn.

We drove all around the city. These are some of the districts I remember seeing; Callao, Miraflores, Barrancas, San Isidro, San Miguel, San Borja, Monterrico and La Molinia.

Our first stop took over 1 1/2 hours due to traffic. This was two museums together: Museum of Gold of Peru and Museum Arms of the World. Not many pictures as again I was immersed in the experience. And what an experience! Even Patrick enjoyed it and said it was the best one he has been to (his words). All I can say, if you are in Lima, this is a MUST SEE. It is all laid out and you just follow the arrows on the floor. Everything has been cataloged and most labels are also in English. It is almost overwhelming. There is over 8,000 pieces of prehispanic gold, mostly from the north coast of Peru cultures: Moche, Vicus, Lambayeque or Sican, Chimu and others. In the Arms museum there are over 20,000 weapons from all over the world and from different periods. There are 8 rooms and Patrick & I have never seen anything like this. If you have any questions about this museum, please reach out to me.

Lunch was at Hornero Steakhouse. Patrick & I shared a strip steak and salad. Prepared perfectly and delicious.

After lunch, more sightseeing and a trip to Laguna de la Molino.

I can’t thank Oscar Frreti enough for showing us so much of his city. He made our time in Lima very memorable. Hasta luego Oscar.

More pictures from our way back to the ship. Also, some pictures of “housing” that I wanted the kids to see.
